Pre-Hardmode bosses[ | ]
- Summoned with an Infested Carcass or by breaking 3 Snot Orbs
Music: Bacterium Prime
For elaborate strategies on defeating Bacterium Prime, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Bacterium Prime strategies
Bacterium Prime is a large, flying bacteria with 1,500 health. It awakens after every third Snot Orb that is broken or after an Infested Carcass is used. Snot Orbs are found in the Contagion rings' chasms, surrounded by Chunkstone, which requires a pickaxe with 60% pickaxe power or higher to mine, although explosives or Purification Powder may be used to bypass this. Once within range, Snot Orbs can be destroyed with a hammer or explosives. Bacterium Prime can only be summoned in the Contagion, but at any time of day.
Bacterium Prime has two forms. In the first form, it can be hit, though all attacks will not inflict damage, and Bactus Minions will float around it. If the main boss is hit 12 times, a new Bactus Minion will spawn. After all of the minions are killed, Bacterium Prime will go into its second form, where it will teleport more frantically and move a lot faster, so a ranged weapon may be needed. Bacterium Prime's second attack form is ramming, like the second form of Eye of Cthulhu. Unlike most other bosses, Bacterium is not immune to knockback.
Bacterium Prime is the only source of Boogers in the game (other than the Bactus Minions spawned while fighting it), and drops a large amount of Baccilite Ore, which are their equivalents to the Corruption items Shadow Scale and Demonite Ore, and the Crimson items Tissue Sample and Crimtane Ore, respectively.
- Summoned with The Beak
Music: Desert Beak
For elaborate strategies on defeating Desert Beak, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Desert Beak strategies
Desert Beak is a large Vulture with 3,500 health. It is summoned using The Beak. It attacks by flying around the player, firing bombs and charging. If the player is above the boss, it enrages, becoming invulnerable and shooting a powerful laser.
Desert Beak is the only source of Desert Feathers in the game, and drops large amounts of Osmium/Rhodium/Iridium Ore, depending on which one is generated in the world.

Exxo Avalon/Phantasm Trophy For elaborate strategies on defeating Phantasm, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Phantasm strategies
Phantasm is a large underworld spirit with 45,000 health. It is summoned using an Ectoplasmic Beacon in the Hellcastle. In its first phase, it will hover above the player, firing a spread of Ghostflame projectiles, which can inflict the Shadow Curse debuff. Upon reaching 75% HP, it will relocate to the center of the Library of Knowledge inside the Hellcastle, and begin to fire sustained beam lasers in a sweeping pattern. After the boss falls below 2/3 HP, it will enrage, becoming immune to damage and firing a spiral spread of Ghostflame projectiles, which also inflict Shadow Curse. After this, Phantasm will become vulnerable again, and fire four sustained beam lasers at the player in a sweeping pattern. It will continue this phase until killed.
Phantasm drops 3-5 Ghost in the Machines, which are used to craft Hellbound Remote and phantom-themed items.

The Wall of Steel is a huge mechanical wall with 55,000 health. It is summoned by throwing a Hellbound Remote into a pool of lava in the Underworld. It is the final boss of Hardmode, because defeating it will irreversibly enable Superhardmode in the world.
It acts similarly to the Wall of Flesh, but instead of flesh-themed Hungry, it has Mechanical Hungry. When the boss is above 1/3 HP, it will fire spreads of Cursed Fireballs and lasers from the respective eyes. Once the boss falls below 1/3 HP, the center aperture will engage, firing a wide-beam, high damage laser every 3 seconds. During the firing of this laser, the Wall of Steel's defense drops to 0.
Wall of Steel drops a Dark Star Heart for each player in the world (upon its first defeat) and many Souls of Blight upon death.
