The Toxin Staff is a Hardmode magic weapon. When used, a cloud of toxic gas will be created at the targeted location, lasting for 30 seconds. Enemies that come into contact with the gas will continously take damage and, if they are vulnerable to it, have the Toxin debuff applied to them, which serves as a stronger version of the Venom debuff. In the case of players, the debuff also reduces light vision.
If the staff is used again while a previous toxic gas cloud still exists, that cloud will be dispersed. Alternatively, the cloud may be dispersed via a right click.
