“An early rain-themed boss which drops several useful early-game accessories and a rain toggle. Intended to be fought pre-EoC.
The Storm Cloudfish is an early Pre-Hardmode boss, intended to be fought before the Eye of Cthulhu. It is the first boss of the Polarities Mod.
While it is alive, its exclusive music Jetstream Migration will play; if the Polarities Mod Music sidemod is not enabled, the vanilla track Boss 1 will play instead.
Spawn[ | ]
Storm Cloudfish does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it by using a Worm on a Balloon. It can only be summoned at or above the surface layer.
Behavior[ | ]
Storm Cloudfish alternates at random between several attacks:
- Charge - The boss aligns itself to the side of the player before rapidly charging horizontally.
- Rain Barrage - The boss aligns itself above and to the side of the player, before doing a short horizontal dash above them, dropping short-lived rain projectiles downwards.
- Raincloud Arena - The boss floats to the side, rapidly shooting cloud orbs which burst into rainclouds, forming a column of long-lasting rainclouds on each side of the player. This attack has a 20 second cooldown.
Below 50%/65% of its health, the Storm Cloudfish causes it to begin raining if it is not already and gains access to empowered versions of its old attacks, which it uses more frequently as its health decreases:
- Electrified Charge - The boss aligns itself to the side of the player, before dashing horizontally even more rapidly, leaving a short-lived trail of lightning orbs.
- Lightning Barrage - The boss aligns itself above and to the side of the player, before doing a short horizontal dash above them, rapidly shooting branching lightning strikes downwards.
Additionally, below this threshold, in Expert Mode, the boss will occasionally shoot a large number of stormcloud orbs at the player, each of which it will shoot a lightning arc at after a short time, leaving behind a short-lived lightning orb in its place.
Aftermath[ | ]
Once the Storm Cloudfish has been defeated for the first time, the following will occur:
- Stormcloud Cichlids will begin spawning naturally.
- The Ghostwriter will begin selling Maws.
Tips[ | ]
- Having vertical mobility accessories like the Cloud in a Bottle or Frog Leg, or simply making an arena with a few platforms, can make it much easier to dodge a lot of the boss's attacks, particularly the charges.
- Using Hermes Boots, it is possible to escape the raincloud arena before it finishes forming.
- The rain from the rain barrage attack has a very short lifetime before vanishing, so dropping downwards once the dash initiates is an easy way to dodge the attack if the player lacks horizontal mobility. The lightning barrage attack can be dodged similarly.
